Head Start managers have high expectations, but often lack the support needed to thrive while meeting them. A significant gap in professional development are basic skills for managers. The Head Start Manager Skills Certificate is designed for anyone who is new to a manager role or who has been a manager for a while, but wants to review foundational skills for managers. This Certificate is focused on applied management skills for Head Start professionals.
The certificate consists of five modules, each dealing with a set of basic skills needed for managers.
Module 1: Being a Manager
Module 2: Building a Culture of Motivation (2-day)
Module 3: Communicate with Confidence (2-day)
Module 4: Building Teams for Problem Solving
Module 5: Better Meetings
This certificate is intended for program management or supervisory staff who need to develop key management skills to support their ongoing success and well-being.
Timeline
This course consists of five modules, each of which is explored in its own month. Three of the modules are 1-day modules. Two of the modules are 2-day modules.
Meetings are 3 hours each day.
There are 21 hours in class and we estimate that there will be 5 hours total (1 hour per module) in preparation time for the meetings. This is a total of 26 professional development hours and 2.6 Continuing Education Units.

For Individuals
- This course provides a key set of basic skills needed to manage a team or staff members.
- This course provides skills in organization, communication, team-building, motivation, and decision-making.
- In most Head Start programs, managers learn over time on the job, often through trial and error. This certificate is designed to help managers to learn practical management skills quickly and to apply them in their programs.
For Programs
- Programs often have high expectations for managers, but have difficulty matching those skills with the professional development needed for managers to thrive in their positions. This certificate program will help managers to learn best practices more quickly and improve the chances that they will thrive in this position.
- There are other courses that focus on performance standards and the requirements related to Head Start. That is not what this certificate is intended to do. This certificate focuses on the core skills of managing programs to make sure that the information in those other programs gets translated into meaningful, sustained action in your organization.
- This certificate program is intended to help meet the 2024 Performance Standards to provide professional development appropriate to a person's role in the organization and support their success and well-being.
